The Ultimate Family Packing List for Ireland

Planning to vacation in Ireland with kids – great choice! This country is perfect for families – for one, it’s safe, there are loads of family-friendly things to do, and it’s fairly easy to get around (once you get used to driving here)!

But packing for a holiday here, especially with kids, requires a lot of pre-planning. As a mom to two young girls, I know how tedious packing for kids can be. In the past, I tended to overpack for my daughters – bringing way more than we needed. And then we were stressed with all the baggage at the airport, and when we landed on the other side. But, I’ve changed my ways, and now I consider myself a pro packer 🙂

As you know, the weather in Ireland can be unpredictable! Often, you’ll get four seasons in one day. So, you need to pack with that in mind.

Here’s my Ireland packing list for families. I’ve thought about everything to ensure your family is fully prepared for all the Emerald Isle has to offer.

Our Family Packing List for Ireland

Clothing Essentials

Layers, Layers, Layers:

Ireland’s weather can change rapidly, so packing layers is crucial. Bring lightweight T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, and sweaters or hoodies for layering. Don’t forget a warm fleece or a thermal layer for colder days. I have this REI Midweight Half-Zipwhich I find to be quite thick and insulative. I have it in the Dusk Heather and Black Heather colors. For my girls, I like the range of colors of these fleeces, and they are very cozy.

Waterproof Jacket:

A must-have for every member of the family, a waterproof and windproof jacket will keep you dry during Ireland’s frequent rain showers. Choose one with a hood for added protection. This Sweaty Betty Nimbus is my go-to choice for women, it comes past the knees, so most of you is protected from the elements. And my girls love the bright colors of their Hatley raincoats, which are waterproof and fully lined. And finally, my husband likes this lightweight waterproof jacket.

Comfortable Pants:

Pack a mix of jeans and comfortable trousers or leggings. Opt for quick-drying fabrics if possible, to handle the occasional rain. I wear my Sweaty Betty modal wide leg pants so much here. And I always buy these Sweaty Betty baselayer leggings for the colder months.

Footwear:

Sturdy, waterproof walking shoes or boots are essential for exploring Ireland’s rugged terrain. Pack an extra pair of shoes for city adventures or dinners out. For hiking, I have these Acrus boots from ArcTeryx  and I wear my Teva Hurricane Sandals most of the time in the warmer months. For my girls, these adidas hiking boots are my go-to. My husband has these Berghaus hiking boots that he rates.

Accessories:

Bring hats and gloves for cooler days, especially if you’re visiting in the fall or winter. Sunglasses with UV protection will be needed in all seasons.

Kids’ Necessities

  1. Child-Specific Gear: If you have young children, consider packing a baby carrier like this highly-rated ergobaby one or a compact stroller for convenience. This Hauck lightweight stroller is lightweight and reasonably priced. You see, Ireland’s cobblestone streets and uneven terrains can be challenging for bulkier strollers. We also use this baby changing bag when traveling.
  2. Entertainment: Long drives and flights can test kids’ patience. Load up tablets with games and movies, and bring books, coloring supplies, or travel-sized board games.
  3. Snacks and Drinks: While you can buy snacks in Ireland, having a small stash of your children’s favorites can be comforting, especially on the flight or on car journeys.

Toiletries and Health

  1. Basic Toiletries: Pack travel-sized shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and toothpaste. Don’t forget deodorant, a hairbrush, and any other personal care items your family uses daily.
  2. Medicines and First Aid: Include a small first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any prescription medications. If your family suffers from motion sickness, pack remedies to help with long drives.
  3. Sunscreen and Bug Spray: Even though Ireland isn’t known for its sunshine, UV rays can still cause sunburn. Bug spray is useful, especially if you plan to explore the countryside.

Travel Documents and Tech

  1. Passports and Identification: Ensure all family passports are up to date and stored safely in a waterproof document holder. Carry copies as a backup.
  2. Travel Insurance: It’s wise to have travel insurance covering health, cancellations, and theft. Keep a copy of your policy details and emergency contact numbers.
  3. Electronics and Chargers: Bring your smartphones, tablets, and camera – the Canon Powershot is my choice of camera for Ireland. A Travel adapter is also always in our bag – Ireland uses Type G plugs (UK-style) with 230V voltage. And a portable power bank is handy for recharging your devices on the go.

Miscellaneous Items

  1. Reusable water bottle: Staying hydrated is important, and Ireland’s tap water is safe to drink. Bring reusable water bottles to fill up throughout the day.
  2. Day Backpack: A compact backpack is useful for carrying daily essentials such as snacks, water, and extra layers while exploring. I really love my Osprey one as it holds so much.
  3. Guide Book and Maps: Although smartphones are handy, having a physical guidebook or map can be useful, especially in areas with poor reception.
  4. Umbrella: A travel sized, wind-resistant umbrella like this one: Compact and sturdy, a must-have for those sudden rain showers.
  5. Souvenir Bag: Leave some space in your luggage for souvenirs. Ireland is known for its crafts, woolen goods, and whiskey, so you might want to bring back a few mementos.

Luggage

I have a Level8 Voyageur Carry-On that’s made of German-made Makrolon® polycarbonate, it has 360° quiet spinner wheels and matches the carry-on size for most airlines. As for my bigger (under the plane luggage) – I will always love my Osprey 55L backpack for this, I have used it in countless countries and it’s over 10 years old now and still in great condition.

Sustainable Travel Tips

  1. Tote Bags: Bring a couple of reusable tote bags for shopping to avoid using plastic bags.
  2. Eco-friendly Toiletries: Consider using biodegradable or solid toiletries to reduce plastic waste.
  3. Support Local: When shopping for souvenirs or eating out, try to support local artisans and businesses to contribute to the local economy.
