One Day in Kilkenny City Itinerary
This is our Kilkenny City Itinerary – we spent a day here recently, and below you can read about everything we did and loved!
Kilkenny City, often referred to as the “Marble City,” is charming and renowned for its medieval architecture, vibrant arts scene, and warm Irish hospitality. Although a day might seem too short to fully experience all that Kilkenny has to offer, with careful planning, you can capture the essence of this historic city.
So, here’s my comprehensive guide on how to spend one delightful day in Kilkenny City.
Morning: Wander around the city

The first thing I like to do when I get to any new city is to spend a few hours on my first morning there, aimlessly wandering the streets to get a true feel for the city.
So with that in mind, I recommend starting your day with a hearty Irish breakfast at one of the city’s cozy cafés. The Fig Tree Café is a great choice if you’re keen for a traditional Irish breakfast and strong coffee.
After breakfast, head for the Medieval Mile, a mile-long route that stretches through the heart of the city. It links most of Kilkenny’s iconic landmarks, like the majestic Kilkenny Castle and the stunning St. Canice’s Cathedral. And as you stroll along, you will pass by medieval buildings, narrow alleyways, and charming cobblestone streets that transport you back in time.
The Medieval Mile Museum is located here, too, in the former St. Mary’s Church. This museum provides an immersive experience into Kilkenny’s medieval past, showcasing fascinating artifacts and offering insights into the city’s development through the ages.
Late Morning: Kilkenny Castle

Later that morning, take a short stroll to the iconic Kilkenny Castle. This majestic structure, dating back to 1195, is a testament to the city’s rich history. You can wander the inside on your own (like we did) or join a guided tour to learn more about the history of the castle and the Butler family, who resided there for centuries. All the rooms are beautifully restored, and the artwork and furniture are phenomenal. We spent around an hour here and a further hour wandering through the castle gardens.
Entry to the castle cost us around 8 euros per adult (it’s more if you want to book a guided tour).

Afternoon: Kilkenny Design Centre & Butler Gallery
Afterwards, make your way to the Kilkenny Design Centre, across the road from the castle. The Centre’s restaurant is famed for its delicious local cuisine, offering everything from savory Irish stew to freshly baked scones. After lunch, take some time to explore the Design Centre’s craft shops, where you can find unique handmade Irish gifts and souvenirs.
Next, you could visit the Butler Gallery. Housed in the historic Evan’s Home, the gallery features contemporary works by Irish artists as well as pieces from its extensive collection.
Alternative Option: Jurassic Newpark (perfect if you’re traveling with kids)

If you’re visiting with kids, I highly recommend making the 5-minute drive out to Jurassic Newpark – a Jurassic-Park-themed park that’s so much fun! We were surprised by how much there is to do here. Our daughters loved seeing the life-size moving dinosaurs, bouncing around in Jurassic Bounce, and the flying Pterosaurus ride. There are also two playgrounds here and a mini petting zoo.
You could have lunch here at the park (there’s a kiosk serving hot and cold food) or go to the restaurant at the hotel next door (The Newpark Hotel).
Entry to Jurassic Newpark costs from 17.50 euros per person (it’s free entry if you stay at the Newpark Hotel next door).
Late Afternoon: Go for a walk

Later in the afternoon, we recommend walking along the River Nore. The riverside path is so picturesque and quiet – at least it was when we walked it on a Monday afternoon. As you walk, you’ll pass by the charming Black Abbey, a stunning example of a 13th-century Dominican priory. You can go inside it and look at its impressive stained glass windows up-close and walk around its lovely cloister garden.
Towards the end of your stroll, you could make a stop into Kyteler’s Inn on St. Kieran’s Street. This historic pub, established in 1324, is steeped in history and legend, famously associated with Dame Alice Kyteler, a woman accused of witchcraft. Top tip – try a pint of locally brewed Smithwick’s ale.

Evening: Dinner and live music
For dinner, we love and recommend Caffe500 – which is located close to Kilkenny Castle. Their wood-fired pizza is incredible, and the staff are so friendly.
After, check out the live music scene at Matt the Millers, a popular riverside pub known for its lively atmosphere and traditional Irish music sessions.
Where to Stay in Kilkenny:

We stayed at the Newpark Hotel about 5 minutes drive from the center of the city. We paid 200 euros for a family room with free breakfast and free entry to the park. There’s also a swimming pool on-site, which we were able to use twice.
But other hotels we considered were the River Court Hotel – a large riverside hotel in the city center and the Pembroke Hotel, which is known for its stylish decor and personalized service.
Getting to Kilkenny:

If you’re flying into Ireland, the nearest major airport is Dublin Airport, around 130 kilometers away. From Dublin city center, you can take a direct train from Heuston Station to Kilkenny, which takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Alternatively, there are bus services like the Dublin Coach and Bus Éireann that offer frequent routes to Kilkenny. If you prefer driving, renting a car is a great option, and the journey from Dublin takes roughly 1.5 hours via the M9 motorway.
From Cork, you’re looking at around 2 hours of driving, and from Galway, around 2.5 hours.
✅ About renting a car in Ireland:
To us, it’s a no-brainer to rent a car in Ireland. After all, Ireland is known as one of the most stunningly beautiful countries in the world. And the best way to get to its hidden gem spots is by hiring a car. Public transport in Ireland is limited and typically only travels between the major towns, villages, and cities in the country!
The cost of renting a car in Ireland can be expensive. However, there are some ways you can save money. We tend to always book our rental car through Discover Cars. This is a search engine for rental cars and allows you to filter by price if you’re on a budget or by vehicle type if there’s a specific car you’re after.
Slainte!
Spending a day in Kilkenny City is like stepping into a living museum, where every corner tells a story from the past, and every site offers a taste of Irish culture. With its blend of history, art, and warm hospitality, Kilkenny promises a memorable experience for any traveler.
Although one day might only scratch the surface, it will undoubtedly leave you with a desire to return and uncover more of this enchanting city.
