Driving from Cork City to Cobh: Where to Stop Along the Way

From Cork City, it’s an easy 30-minute (21 km) drive to colorful Cobh. The route follows the East Cork Parkway – a motorway that does get busy at peak hours. Along the drive, you could make a couple of stops in places like Glounthaune and Fota Wildlife Park, if you have the time.

Alternatively, you can hop on the train from Kent Station, which will take around 30 minutes and costs from €3.30 per adult for a one-way ticket. And if you’re coming from Cork Airport, your best bet is to hire a rental car and drive to Cobh. This will take around 30 minutes and follow the N40 motorway for most of the way.

Anyway, let’s get started, shall we – these are the places I always try to stop at when driving from Cork City to Cobh.

Cork City

Near the South Mall in Cork City!

Before you head off on your short drive to Cobh, be sure to spend a few days (or at least a day) in Cork City. Try to tick off the city’s top sights like the world-famous English Market and the Shandon Bells (a local favorite spot). And squeeze in a visit to St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, University College Cork, and Blackrock Castle.

All of these are located within the city limits, so you can walk between them.

Where to stay in Cork City: The River Lee Hotel – offering prime views over the River Lee, large bedrooms, and a fantastic on-site restaurant. This is one of the most popular hotels in Cork!

Glounthaune

You could make a quick pitstop in the charming village of Glounthaune, which is built along Cork Harbour. It’s a bit of a hidden gem in Cork. And you will need to turn off the motorway to get here. If you have time, take a walk along the harbour and maybe grab lunch in one of my favorite restaurants in Cork – The Elm Tree!

Fota Wildlife Park

You will pass the second-largest zoo in Ireland (behind Dublin Zoo) on your drive to Cobh. Spread across 100 acres, Fota Wildlife Park is home to cheetahs, rhinos, lions, various types of monkeys, kangaroos, giraffes, zebras, lemurs, and more. There’s also a large Tropical House which houses tortoises, sloths, fish, butterflies, etc.

On the grounds of Fota, there are two playgrounds and a variety of places to eat. We love the food truck-type area near the tiger enclosure, as it offers good coffee, pizza, or doughnuts. You can also hop on board an open-air train that takes you around the park; a return journey costs just €2, or one-way is €1. You can hop on the train near the entrance or at the Oasis Cafe.

Cobh

Allow at least 3-5 hours in Cobh, or if possible, stay the night. It’s one of the most popular tourist towns in Cork, and there’s loads to do here.

If I had a couple of hours to spend in Cobh, I’d start it off with a wander up to St Colman’s Cathedral and then from there heading over to the very colorful Deck of Cards houses nearby. Then, I’d grab a takeaway coffee from Seasalt Cafe on Casement Square and stroll over to the waterfront to check out the Titanic Experience. Where I’d learn all about the last Titanic passengers to board here at Cobh (then known as Queenstown).

Later that afternoon, I’d learn all about the history of Cobh by visiting the Cobh Heritage Centre. And finally, in the evening, I’d do something completely different and join a ghost tour of the town, or if I was visiting in the summer, do a pub tour by speedboat.

Where to stay in Cobh: WatersEdge Hotel is a 3-star waterfront hotel that boasts lovely views of Cork Harbor. The rooms are very stylish.

Parking in Cobh: Thankfully, parking in Cobh is fairly easy to find. There are a few public car parks, for example, the Five Foot Way car park is open 24 hours and costs €10 for overnight parking. However, there’s a 48-hour limit to parking here. There’s also a public car park next to St Colman’s Cathedral called Parking People Cobh Cathedral car park, the daily rate here is around €8.50 and it’s open 24 hours.

Renting a Car in Ireland

Renting a car in Ireland is a great idea!

When it comes to driving in Ireland, choose a vehicle that suits your travel needs. If you’re planning to explore rural areas or rugged landscapes, consider renting a compact or four-wheel-drive vehicle, which will handle narrow, winding roads more efficiently. Be sure to book your rental car well in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons, to secure the best rates and availability.

The cost of renting a car in Ireland can be expensive. However, there are some ways you can save money. We tend to always book our rental car through Discover Cars. This is a search engine for rental cars and allows you to filter by price if you’re on a budget or by vehicle type if there’s a specific car you’re after.

  • Generally speaking, you can expect to pay around €300 per week for a manual (stick shift) economy car; this will rise to around €350 during the peak months of June, July and August.
  • Try to rent your vehicle from major cities such as Dublin, Cork, Galway, Belfast, and Limerick. That’s because car hire companies in smaller cities tend to have fewer and more expensive options.
  • Book as small a car as you can manage!
  • We highly recommend selecting fully comprehensive car insurance. The roads and car parking spaces in Ireland are narrow, so it will quell your fears of getting a bump or scratch. Check if your credit card insurance covers this (some do!)

Slainte!
